What Are Birds?

Not sure I can answer the question, but am nonetheless very pleased that What Are Birds? has included one of my found poems in the current combined 2.4/3.1 issue. Cover art by Mark Blickley.

“even the echoes” is a gorgeous poem. Still, I find it interesting that What Are Birds classified it as art instead of poetry.

Thanks, Leslie. You’re right. It’s a hard line to draw: is it poetry because it’s made of words or is it art because it’s visual? I am often perplexed when I submit these pieces, reading and re-reading the publication guidelines to figure out which category is the best fit. Sometimes they specify and sometimes the editors make an arbitrary decision, but in any case I’m pleased whenever my work is accepted!

It’s definitely both. Maybe it’s because I’m a word person that I want to give primacy to the poetry. But I would certainly never argue that it’s also art. Thanks for being there making it.
