the light…the world…

Winter elbows its way into April, a fresh dusting of snow on the hilltops. Everywhere else, rain. But the planet knows its job and the northern days begin, almost imperceptibly, to lengthen. At 8:45 in the evening, there’s a sapphire suggestion of light in the northwest. At 5:30 in the morning, it’s no longer entirely night. When I step out to pick up the newspaper, the sky is thick with clouds. It’s still too dark to see much of anything, but the air is filled with the whining squeals of gulls. They’re everywhere, close. Calling in the morning, invisible.
